Apple French Toast

Apple French Toast

2 large eggs
1/3 cups half and half
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of salt
3 3/4 inch-thick egg bread slices

Apples:
6 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 cups sugar
2 apples, peeled, cored, cut into 1/2-inch wedges
Whisk first 5 ingredients in medium bowl to blend.  Arrange bread slices in 9-inch square pan.  Pour egg mixture over, turning to coat.  Let stand 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, prepare apples: Melt 4 tablespoons butter in heavy large skillet over medium heat.  Mix in sugar.  Add apples and cook until syrup turns deep golden brown, stirring frequently, about 15 minutes.  Set aside.

Melt remaining 2 tablespoons butter in heavy large skillet over medium heat.  Add bread slices and cook until deep golden brown, turning once, about 12 minutes.

Cut bread slices diagonally in half and divide between plates.  Bring apple mixture to simmer.  Spoon over french toast and serve.
